Beaded cat, Yama

Working on a gift for my husband's bday. It is our cat Yama, who is a Scottish Straight. I love that Scottish Folds and Sottish Straights look cranky when they aren't lol! It's about 3/4's finished,  I need to add small tube beads over the neck fur to really get that fluffy neck ruff right.

Victoria Albert Museum Cleaning Metals Basic Guidelines

{Hi, this is an older article I posted 10/2015, it's good.}
So I've been etching sterling silver and did a web search for cleaning metals. I wanted to go to a dependable source for info on cleaning etched metals, not a site that just copies and pastes other sites that just copy and paste erroneous info. You know what I mean eh? lol (wink wink say no more eh?)

So who would know the proper way to care for precious metal objects than a museum that has been on top of the subject for nearly 150years?

Jewelry Making Class with Jasmine & Violet

Sunday I finally had a chance to teach Jasmine &  Violet some beaded netting techniques. Jasmine will be 10 this summer and Violet is 7. Violet actually sat for nearly 5 hours at the table with us while Jasmine and I were beading away, what a trooper! That's quite an accomplishment for a 7 year old :^)

Beaded coil bracelet and Wire crochet tool ISK invisible spool knitting

Hi everybody, I am working on a beaded snake bracelet that I made with a mod to the 4 loop Yoola ISK loom. I started the wire but on the second row I added stitches between the 4 loops to create a total of 8. I added memory wire within the brass crocheted tube to keep its coiled shape. Using size 11/0 beads. I think I should add a heavy gauge brass wire instead of memory wire.

Yael Falk of Yooladesign.com and Yoola ISK wire jewelry knitting

Hi Everyone, just interviewed another innovator of wire jewelry. Yael (Yoola) Falk at Yooladesign.com, she is the creator of the ISK invisible spool knitting device we call Yoola ISK. I am a huge fan of the ISK and have been using all the different sized looms everyday since it arrived about three weeks ago. I am literally addicted to it. Not to mention that crochet is so calming to the soul. I love it, I can take it anywhere anytime, waiting in the doctor's office at a restaurant or while watching TV at night with my husband. I love it. These are the blog posts that show what I have made with the ISK's
Yael aka Yoola

How do you stay focused while at work? Do you have post it's every where LOL (I do) Do you put the phone on silent?  LOL.... I'm not the most focused person... and it is hard for me to do the same thing  for long, I always do several things in parallel , my phone is on silent only when I do Yoga or when i go to sleep. there is always potential distraction...

Say you want to create a new design and perhaps you can't come up with anything, how do you get past that creative wall so to speak?  Creative block is something that every artist or designer experience from time to time , luckily it doesn't happen to me very often, but when it does , I have several ideas to overcome it .

The most important thing is to embrace it and understand that it's a great opportunity to lean back and refill with inspiration . I love refilling my inspiration in 2 ways , one is going to the museum to forget about my work and see others , and the second is to go out to nature and breath......

If any of these don't help and I have a deadline I give myself design school missions , such as , take an object disassemble it and reassemble it .

I believe a creative person will always dig the way out of a block , because he has it within himself .

When work starts demanding more of your time, say you need to work a few 12 hour work days. How do you deal with that?  I'm not spoiled , and I don't mind working hard when needed , luckily I have a very supportive family , my hubby and kids respect my work and always help me go through such times . They both take off my day to day loads and even help if they can.
How do you recharge your batteries? Do you take a few days off and spend time at home, go on a weekend road trip?  To charge my batteries I need to go out , to my garden , to a walk and sometimes as far as the desert , which I find very effective . The emptiness is overwhelming and brings a lot of peace and quiet.

When you had that AhHAAA! moment and created the Yoola ISK, how long was it in testing and development stages? How long from creation to actually selling it?
Geeee..... I don't have a ready answer for this one .... Let's see,

I guess the whole ISK starters product development probably took about 6 to 8 months , we made prototypes , tested them , produced the mold , these are long processes .

And to be frank it's a process that never ends actually , because there are always improvements to be made and the materials around the actual product , packaging , marketing materials and the sort.

Is there a particular country that the Yoola ISK has become more popular in?  The Yoola ISK is popular all over the world , but it's accessible mainly to English speakers wherever they are . Basically because this is the language it is marketed in.

This doesn't mean that only people from USA, UK and Australia have access to it , but they are more likely to find them , after all the internet is such a jungle and it isn't easy to be found .

How to crochet a bezel Tutorial $18.50

And last but by no means least,... do you have any words of wisdom for other women in the maker/arts&crafts community who may have an idea or device they have created that they want to send to market?  Of course ! I think it's the most amazing thing when a maker has an idea for a product to support their craft, and they are willing to share it with others.  if they are not familiar with product development its good if they take it slow enough but not too slow…. test everything with prototypes so there are no mistakes. Its also important to keep aside energy and funds for marketing ….. Because its not enough you have a wonderful product you also need to get the word out there.

Luckily when I launched the ISK starters I already had a relatively large wire crochet community following my patterns, they embraced the ISK starters and I recovered quite quickly my investment,  this community keeps growing daily which gives me so much satisfaction. Spreading my wire crochet technique is one of the best things I have ever done J .

Interview with ALM Adriana Laura Mendez

This is my interview with Adriana Laura Mendez. She teaches a new technique that I have not seen before. I just recently bought one of her tutorial packages that were on sale at her Etsy shoppe.  They are excellent, they included 4 videos and 4 PDF tutorials with clear detailed photos.
Tutorial Sale! $10

The technique you teach, how did you develop it?
This technique is a mesh of circles that are linked to each other, the mesh obtained has a uniform and delicate beauty. This pattern of mesh I discovered, through a friend that I have, modified it with my own variants and the result is a firm mesh and very beautiful and is perfect for weaving wire for use in jewelry. Over time remains unchanged, does not twist. It is an alternative for pieces of jewelry that stand out for not being conventional, every woman likes to wear jewelry that are unique pieces and this jewelry has this feature.

How long did it take you to perfect your crochet technique?
Nine years ago I started working with handwoven wire crochet. My professional work was the design of green spaces, and after 20 years I gradually left the profession to devote to perfecting the mesh, and incorporate it into design. Achieving skill in the art has the same common feature: practice. During the first year I spent many hours hand-weaving until I had achieved knowledge of fabric tension and thus achieve a uniform mesh fabric. Until it no longer took many hours to reach the expected result.

Are there similar ways to crochet wire and how old are they. Do you know their history?

What I found similar is the use of wire, but not the mesh fabric. The ancient Etruscans and Greeks had used very fine gold or silver threads that intertwine with each other and welding them with small drops obtain thin pieces of lace, they called filigree. In ancient costumes some of the ornaments were with metallic threads as pieces of macramé. In France in the history of costume, the use of wire strands is applied only in embroidery. I've seen work woven wire but using machine knitters. But knitting with wire and craft crochet needle (no machines) are contemporary practices.

WireHandmadeJewelry
How long have you crocheted with wire?
The practice of my woven jewelry has been almost nine years, and I have four years with my son Julian who was interested in the marketing of my work. It was he who organized to transmit electronic books and tutorials. He is also the engine of my work, who organizes videos for YouTube and impels me when the local market disappoints me with its constant economic problems and lack of materials.

Where are you from?
I live in Argentina, we are geographically in the southern tip of South America, my residence is located in the City of Buenos Aires

When you want to create a new design and cannot come up with ideas, how do you overcome your creative block?
Luckily I do not suffer such crises. I do not make collections for seasons, and for that reason I am not subject to specific topics or delivery dates. My only creative block is not to have materials to work with, that creates a lot of frustration and I loose my imagination, have spent my energy.  Woven wire jewelry is limited only by the woven mesh. Waiting for the moment you begin the creative process of bringing innovation to incorporate precious gems, or combination of textiles for necklaces, and other materials.  The wire for weaving that I use is gold filled, silver and copper.

What country have your tutorials been most popular?
These tutorials have a defined age range where it generates more interest is between 35-60 years and is in the US.

When you take a break from work with your tutorials and crochet, how do you like to recharge your batteries or relax?
Since twelve years I play tennis, it's a sport I love and always play, it relaxes me and revitalizes. But I also like to read, nothing specifically current, issues of my country and the world.  I love the collection of designer fashion, I always find this talent magical, to create new costumes, as they can find new ways every year in garments that we wear, for hundreds of years, they always come up with something new!!!

etsy.com
And last but not least.... do you have words of wisdom for other ladies who are creating new crochet or wire techniques who want to take them to market?

We all have within us a spark. In any activity undertaken and anywhere in the world we find that we have the same characteristics, what makes us ignite that spark or light is the perseverance in our work, to achieve that perfection and that we will bear the fruit of achieving our objective. It may be the case of a very skilled woman with her materials and she achieves beautiful jewelry, but she is not as skilled at selling or marketing because she has not learned these talents. Or perhaps because their sole activity is only in the creating of things.  For the public to know your work, you need to know how to use the internet, how to take good photos, marketing etc. etc. In order for people to know of her so she can sell her creations she will have to learn about marketing and the internet, being forced to learn out of necessity something more than crochet with woven wire and crochet needle ...

Fine Silver Netting with Yoola ISK

This time I used 28 gauge  fine silver wire.  In the comparison photo you can see a difference between fine silver and silver plate. Oh I haven't a .6mm needle yet. Been using a needle that's larger 1.30mm.

Finished first piece with Yoola ISK

This is my first finished piece from the Yoola ISK!  It's great,  a super fine netting. I used 30 gauge, which is not recommended as it is too fine. I'm using 28 gauge next.
